Ontario Security Guard Training and Exam Checklist
A checklist for tracking Ontario training, testing, application documents, and post-exam next steps.

Quick answer
Use this Ontario checklist to track dependencies in order. It is an educational planning tool, not an application form. Confirm every requirement against the official pages linked below because fees, accepted documents, and testing procedures can change.
Before choosing training
- I am at least 18 and legally entitled to work in Canada.
- I reviewed Ontario’s clean-criminal-record eligibility rules.
- I identified two different government-issued documents for identity and work entitlement.
- My legal name is consistent across identification, or I have the required name-change document.
- I compared eligible Ontario training providers, full prices, schedules, and instructor support.
- I confirmed whether emergency first aid/CPR is included or whether my current certificate is accepted.
Do not rely on a provider’s marketing page for the final licensing decision. Use the Ontario individual-licence page when an eligibility or document question matters.
During and after training
- I attended the full required program.
- I covered each ministry syllabus area, not only a short test-prep summary.
- I received the first-aid/CPR certificate where applicable.
- The provider recorded my legal name correctly.
- I received and saved my Ontario training completion number.
Store the number in a secure place. It is needed for test registration but is not itself a licence or test result.
Before booking the test
- I used the testing provider reached from Ontario’s official page.
- I selected the security guard test, not private investigator testing.
- I checked the current test price, refund, cancellation, and retest rules.
- I reviewed language and accessibility arrangements.
- For online testing, I completed the system check on the device and network I will use.
- For in-person testing, I confirmed the DriveTest address, arrival time, and required ID.
- I saved the booking confirmation.
Study readiness
- I can explain the difference between observation, inference, and accusation.
- I understand Ontario role limits and when to call police or a supervisor.
- I practised report writing, communication, patrol, emergency, and human-rights scenarios.
- I completed at least one timed 60-question mock exam.
- I reviewed weak topics instead of memorizing answer letters.
- I know that a practice score does not guarantee an official result.
After testing
- I followed the official result instructions.
- I saved the Ontario testing completion number after a successful result.
- I obtained the correct Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check in official format.
- My photo meets Ontario’s current dimensions, recency, background, and file rules.
- I prepared front-and-back copies of both accepted IDs.
- I have an Ontario mailing address and the current $80 application fee.
- For online application, I can access Ontario.ca Login and have the original digital record-check PDF.
After approval
- I downloaded and checked the digital licence.
- I carry a digital or printed copy while working.
- I recorded the birthday-linked expiry date and set renewal reminders.
- I understand that information changes and certain convictions must be reported through the official process.
