How Long Does the Ontario Security Guard Licensing Process Take?
A practical timeline guide for training, testing, records checks, application review, and delays.

Quick answer
There is no single guaranteed Ontario licensing timeline. The fixed training minimum is 40 hours when first aid/CPR is included, but provider schedules, test appointments, record-check delivery, and application corrections vary. Ontario says test results are available within five business days, correctly completed online licence applications can take up to 15 calendar days, and correctly completed mail applications can take up to 30 calendar days.
Stage 1: eligibility and document planning
Before enrolling, read Ontario’s eligibility rules and check that you have suitable identity and work-entitlement documents. If names differ across documents or a criminal-record issue may affect eligibility, resolving it early is more useful than finishing training quickly and discovering the problem at application time.
The Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check is needed for the licence application. Processing time and delivery format depend on the police service or authorized channel. Online applicants need the original, unaltered digital PDF, so request the correct format.
Stage 2: basic training
The Ontario course is at least 40 hours including emergency first aid and CPR, or at least 33.5 hours when an accepted existing certificate allows the first-aid component to be excluded. Calendar time depends on whether the provider offers an intensive schedule, evenings, weekends, or instructor-led online delivery.
After attendance is complete, the provider must submit the training information and give you the training completion number. Ask when that administrative step occurs; the last class does not necessarily mean the number is immediately available.
Stage 3: test booking and results
Appointment availability varies by delivery method and location. The test itself has 75 minutes of writing time. Ontario’s study guide says the result is available within five business days. A successful result provides the testing completion number required for the licence application.
If a retest is needed, add new booking availability, preparation time, and another result period. This is why a “licence in a weekend” claim is not a reliable plan.
Stage 4: licence application
Once the testing completion number, record check, photo, two IDs, Ontario mailing address, and payment are ready, submit through the official channel. Ontario’s stated processing times apply to correctly completed applications:
- online: up to 15 calendar days;
- mail: up to 30 calendar days.
A returned application resets the practical timeline. Ontario allows 90 calendar days to provide requested corrections before closing the application and retaining the fee. A corrected online resubmission may take up to another 15 calendar days.
Build a realistic plan
Work backward from when you hope to be available, but do not accept security guard shifts before the licence is valid. Add time for provider scheduling, test availability, document delivery, and one correction. Keep a dated checklist of confirmations rather than relying on memory.
The timeline is Ontario-specific. Other provinces use different authorities, training programs, and processing systems.
